The first electric guitar was invented by George Beauchamp. He built the first one in 1931 and he called it the Frying Pan. It was a lap steel guitar but it had a magnetic pickup attached to the neck which gave it the ability to be played through an amplifier. The Frying Pan was produced by the Rickenbacker company up until 1939. Les Paul took note of the electric guitar and wanted to make his own version of it that could be played like a regular guitar.
