Our name really says it all. We are a blog devoted to the Spanish guitar, and in particular, flamenco. We have been in operation since 2012 and have written over 100 different posts on flamenco guitar.

The origin of this style dates back to the time of the Moors as they ruled Spain from 711 to 1492. The Moors came from Africa and brought with them musical instruments such as lutes, ouds, and other stringed instruments. The term “flamenco” comes from the Spanish word meaning “Flemish” and was given to those who migrated from Flanders in Belgium to Spain. From these origins, flamenco evolved into the music and dance styles that we know today.

The history of flamenco is long and complicated. It evolved from a number of different cultures, including Spanish Gypsies, Moors, Jews, Christians, Latin Americans and Africans. Despite its evolution over time, the style remains true to its roots in terms of structure, rhythm and chord progression. Flamenco is characterized by a strong rhythm section consisting of drums (cajon), bass guitar (bajo sexto) and a vocalist (cantor). In addition to these elements there are two main instruments: a lead guitar (guitarra) which plays a melody line over top of everything else;

The gitano flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía was considered one of the greatest flamenco guitarists of all time. He died on February 24, 2014 in Mexico City at age 66 from a heart attack while swimming with his family on vacation. He had been suffering from atrial fibrillation for years and had undergone a heart operation in 2012 to fix it but despite that he still had bouts of irregular heartbeat which eventually led to his death.

Flamenco is one of the many forms of Spanish folk music, which is known to be an integral part of the country’s culture. Several traditional instruments are used in this genre, chief among them being the Spanish guitar.
