Guitar straps come in many different materials and styles. When considering what kind of strap to use, think about the material, length, width and style of strap. The most important factor is the way a strap feels in hand.

Strap Material:

Leather is the most common material used for guitar straps. Leather feels good in hand, doesn’t break easily and lasts a long time. Sometimes leather straps have fur on the back of them, which is not only soft but also looks nice. Leather is perfect for guitar straps if you can afford it. Nylon is another material used for guitar straps. It’s not as comfortable as leather but it breaks less easily and costs less than leather does. Faux leather (fake leather) is a nylon material that looks like leather but isn’t as comfortable or as durable. However, it’s cheaper than real leather so if you want a cheap, durable strap that looks alright then this could be your choice.

There are other materials used for guitar straps such as cotton webbing with metal grommets along the edges which can add some extra style points to your strap if you’re into that sort of thing! Vinyl straps are often embossed with designs. These straps are inexpensive and come in a variety of colors. They are not as comfortable as other materials but will last for years if treated well.

The material of the strap is also important. Some people like a padded strap, which may be helpful for heavier guitars, but the padding makes the strap more difficult to adjust. This increases the likelihood of “slippage” in which the guitar slides down to rest on your leg rather than staying at its desired position on your shoulder. It also decreases your range of motion due to the extra effort needed to move around with it.

Generally, we recommend you get a cotton strap with leather ends and an adjustable length. Cotton is comfortable against your skin, and leather ends are easy to attach and won’t tear out easily.

Cloth – A cloth strap is usually made of cotton or polyester, which are lightweight and comfortable. Cloth straps are also often very stylish with designs ranging from paisley to skulls and everything in between.
