I was asked by a friend about the difficulty of learning guitar. I am very grateful for this question. It is full of insights and got me thinking about how I learned to play and why it is not as hard as many people think.

When I started to learn the guitar I was convinced that I would have to practice every day for years before I could sound good enough to play with other musicians. This was based on my experience with playing trumpet in high school band and my belief that if you want to get better at something you need to do it every day. So, I was surprised when after only 2 months of practicing 2 or 3 times per week I could play well enough to join a band and we were even offered a paying gig!

What I didn’t know at the time was that there is an important difference between the skills required to play guitar and those required for other instruments such as trumpet or piano. As an example, when you practice trumpet you are concentrating on one thing at a time; blowing air, opening your mouth and moving your tongue in just the right way to buzz your lips, moving your fingers in different combinations, etc. While you are doing this you are also concentrating on playing what is written in the music book or what your teacher
