Guitar Store

Why am I doing this? I’ll tell you why. Sometime back in the 70s, in a fit of teenage passion, I bought a guitar. It was a cheapo department store Strat knockoff, but it was playable and it looked great.

Over the years it fell apart. The cheapo Strat was made of plastic and foil, apparently, and after two decades of abuse the neck warped until it was unplayable. The body cracked along the edges and through the paint at every stress point. The electronics went haywire because they were held in place by bottlecaps and toothpicks.

But all that time it remained one heck of a nice-looking guitar. And I kept thinking that someday I’d find someone to fix it up for me so it would play as well as it looked.

Last year I finally did find someone willing to refurbish my Strat – for $800! As much as I love the looks, eight hundred bucks is too much to pay for something that’s only worth $75 when intact.

So instead I decided to buy another cheapo Strat from a department store. This one cost about $120 new – still more than twice what my old guitar is worth to

The guitar store was in a strip mall, between a pizza place and a coffee shop. It was not what I expected.

I had no idea what to expect. I’d never been in a guitar store before.

I went in because I needed a guitar.

I didn’t need one the way you need a car or a refrigerator, or the way parents need to make sure their kids get enough vegetables.

I just wanted one, but I couldn’t figure out why.

Unlike the other kids, who played air guitar along with their favorite songs, I didn’t pretend to play real songs on my plastic guitar. But unlike adults, who put their guitars in the back of their closets after they got married, I didn’t stop wanting one just because there were more important things to do with my time and money. I don’t know how many years this went on for; it was decades before I got one.

And when I finally did get one, it wasn’t because of anything that had happened up until then–because of what kind of person I’d turned out to be or where my life was going; it was just because at that moment it happened to seem like a good idea to buy one from that particular store with that particular salesman at
