How to Learn Guitar – Start Slow

One of the most common problems for beginners is that they try to learn too many chords or attempting full songs right from the start. This usually leads to quitting because playing guitar becomes overwhelming and frustrating.

Instead, start with only one easy strumming song (I’ll give you a few recommendations further down this page). Try to play this song using downstrokes with your pick for now. Don’t worry about playing the chords right. Just get those downstrokes going up and down in time with the song. You can always speed up later once you have mastered a slow tempo.

Learning how to play an instrument also takes muscle memory, so it takes time for your fingers to learn where to go without looking. Keep at it, even if it seems like slow progress. If you don’t give up, you will be amazed at how quickly your playing improves!

1. Get A Guitar

This seems obvious, but before you can play the guitar, you need one! Without going into too much detail (we have another article that covers all of this), there are three main types of guitars to choose from: acoustic, electric, and classical.

The best guitar for beginners is likely an acoustic guitar, which is relatively inexpensive (compared to electric or classical guitars) and doesn’t require any amplification. You get it out of the box and start playing.

2. Tune The Guitar

You might not realize this at first, but your guitar is always out of tune. Even if it’s brand new and just came out of the factory, it will still be out of tune by a few cents (a cent is 1/100th of a semi-tone). If you’ve had your guitar for any amount of time and haven’t tuned it recently, then it’s probably even further out of tune right now!

You can skip right to the lesson that best suits your level and style, or if you are a beginner it may be best for you to start with “basic knowledge”.
