This is a blog about how to play guitar quickly. We will cover alternate picking and sweep picking. For all you speed metal fans out there, this site is for you! These are the lessons I wished I would have had when I first started playing guitar. They will give you a solid foundation in technique on which to build your own style.
I think that many of my students and other guitarists could benefit from learning this material. I am making it available here on the web for free because there are many aspiring players out there who have found that they do not have the money to pay for lessons or books.
There are also classical guitarists who find it difficult to find materials which apply explicitly to their genre, even though much of this material can be applied to any style of music with a little creativity. The focus here is on electric guitar playing, but most of the exercises and techniques can be used by anyone.
How to Build Guitar Speed
I am often asked why I play so fast. The answer is simple. I practice a lot. The key to playing fast is to practice slowly and learn the proper technique for each part of your solo. When I first began playing lead guitar, I had a hard time building speed because I didn’t know how to go about it. I would practice my scales over and over again, but never really got any faster. Then one day, when my teacher asked me to play a scale for him, he stopped me in the middle of it and said “Speed isn’t everything”. That was the day my life changed as a guitarist.
From right then on, I decided that technique was more important than speed and set out on a journey to become a better player. To do this, I would work on one exercise per day and try to get it perfect before moving on to another exercise. It was very tedious at first because my hands would cramp up after just a few minutes of practicing, but once I learned how to relax them, the process became much easier.
The first thing you need to understand is that your right hand needs to be relaxed at all times during your soloing or you will never achieve that high level of speed you
The biggest challenge when learning to play guitar is building up speed. This is especially true in the metal genre, where players need to be able to shred at high speeds. Unfortunately, many players find they are unable to build speed when trying to learn to play guitar. The following tips will help you learn how to build guitar speed as you play.
Learn the Basics First
If you have just started playing guitar, it is important that you first learn the basics of the instrument before you try to play at high speeds. The more comfortable you are with basic techniques, such as strumming and finger picking, the easier it will be for you to build up speed later on.
Practice Your Scales
Scales are a great way to build up your speed on the guitar. Start by practicing your scales slowly, gradually increasing your speed until you can play them at full tempo. Then take each scale and try to play it in different ways with different rhythms and fingerings. Once you are able to do this successfully, it will be much easier for you to build up your overall playing speed.
There are two basic components to building guitar speed. The first involves improving your ability to physically play any given pattern of notes at a high rate of speed. The second involves improving your ability to accurately identify and locate a given note on the fret board.
Training your body is not unlike training for physical sports. It takes time, effort and patience. There are certain exercises that can be done in order to build strength, agility and endurance. However, there are no shortcuts when it comes to building speed.
The most important thing to do when attempting to build speed is to be patient. Trying to play too fast too soon will only lead to frustration and possibly injury. Start slow, be accurate and gradually increase the tempo each day until you reach your desired goal.
The first thing I need to say is that building guitar speed the right way takes time, so you will have to be patient. If you want to build guitar speed fast, then you need to practice the right things in the right way.
I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years now (yes, I am old), and I have put together this collection of tips that have really helped me over the past few years to improve my own speed and technique. This article will help you avoid many of the mistakes that many players make when trying to build speed on their instrument.
Tip
Speed is a great thing to have, but it’s always best to be able to play well slowly before you try to play fast. Be sure of your technique and ability to play everything slowly before you even try playing fast. In order to play anything fast, you need to be able to play the same thing slowly first.
Start with arpeggios. You can start with two-note arpeggios and then expand them into 3-note arpeggios. You can learn these all over the neck as you see below. You can also learn them with different string combinations (2 strings, 3 strings, etc). After that you can move on to other types of exercises such as scale runs (2 notes per string scales are great for speed) and other things that help build speed and technical proficiency.
The same way you learn to play anything. You put your fingers on the strings, pick them and move them around. Then you practice some more and get better at it.
Playing guitar is a very physical thing. Your brain has to coordinate your hands, feet, mouth and nose in time with the music. It takes a lot of practice to get good at it.
I’ll give you a few tips. But remember the most important thing is to practice. Practice whenever you can, even if it’s just for 5 minutes before going out. And try to make all of your practice productive, not just mindless repetition of the same things over and over again.
