I think you can roughly divide people who want to learn guitar into two categories. There are the people who want to be a rock star, and then there are the people who want to play an instrument.

I’ll admit I’m biased toward the latter. I’ve never wanted to be a rock star; I just wanted to play an instrument. And the first step in playing an instrument is figuring out how to buy one.

So what kind of guitar should you buy? How much should it cost? To answer these questions, I’ve broken down my advice into five general guidelines:

1) Get an acoustic guitar with steel strings. You won’t be able to strum along with your favorite tunes until next week, but learning on an acoustic will be easier and more fun once you do get your skills.

2) Try before you buy! A

1. Get a comfortable guitar. If you are uncomfortable playing the guitar, then you won’t enjoy it as much. You want something that is easy to hold and play. If it hurts to play, then the problem may be with your posture or the way you are holding the guitar. A guitar teacher can tell you if your technique is right or not.

2. Get a guitar that sounds good. Acoustic guitars can sound wonderful, but they also vary a lot in quality of sound. You want one that suits your needs as well as sounds good to you. Happily, many inexpensive acoustic guitars have wonderful playing feel and sound great too!

3. Get a guitar with good playability (action). This means that everything about the instrument allows for ease of playing—the strings are not too high from the fretboard and the strings don’t buzz when played open or fretted at any point on the neck.

4. Get a guitar with decent tuning machines (tuners). Tuning machines keep your guitar in tune, so you need ones that stay in tune well!

5. Get a guitar made from quality materials (tone woods). Most guitars under $500 will have laminate (ply) backs and sides while higher end guitars will have solid wood
