That’s a common question we get from people who are just starting out. We want to help you find the information that you need in order to take your first steps as a guitarist.

We have put together this article with links to resources for all of our readers, whether you are picking up a guitar for the first time or if you’ve been playing for years. This article is broken down into three sections: how to choose your guitar, how to learn to play and how to practice.

How to Learn Guitar

Welcome to my page on how to learn guitar. I started playing guitar back in the 1980s and was taught by several teachers, including some very well-known names! I have been teaching for about 20 years now, and have been teaching online for over a decade.

There are many reasons why people want to learn guitar. Some do it just for fun, others want to impress their friends and family, some want to be in a band, while others want to become professional guitarists. Whatever your reason, I’m sure you’ll find what you need on this page!

There are two main sections on this page:

How to Learn Guitar – where I outline the different ways you can learn guitar, whether that is through private lessons or through self-study. I also talk about which ones are the best for different types of people.

Learning Resources – where I list some of the best books, DVDs, websites and other learning materials you can use to learn guitar. If there is something you can’t find here then please let me know and I’ll try my best to help you out!

Choose the right guitar

Before you start learn to play the guitar, it’s important to choose the right guitar for you. There are many different types of guitar, but they all share some common features.

Pick a style of music to play

This is an important consideration when choosing your first guitar. Acoustic guitars are good all-rounders and a great option for beginners. They can be used for fingerpicking as well as strumming and have a wide range of sounds. If you want to learn rock or heavy metal then an electric guitar is probably your best bet. These guitars are usually more comfortable to play because of their smaller body, thinner strings and shorter neck. Classical guitars have nylon strings which are easier on your fingers than steel strings, but they aren’t suitable for rock or metal.

There are also bass guitars if you’re interested in learning that style of music – these have four strings and look similar to an electric guitar, except with a longer neck and scale length.
