When I was a kid my parents got me the kit from Stewart MacDonald. I think it was their first foray into building guitars, and they were impressed with how much you could get for your money. All the pieces came un-cut and pre-drilled, just like I saw on TV. The guitar was one of those classic Les Paul shapes, with two humbucker pickups, two volume and tone knobs, and three way pick up selector switch.

I was really excited when I got it out of the box, but my joy quickly faded as I ran into problem after problem. First off, the instructions were terrible; they didn’t explain anything in any detail. They used pictures that were blown up so you couldn’t read any of the labels or see what was going on. My dad tried to help but he had never built a guitar either so he couldn’t really explain anything to me.

I tried Googling a bit but didn’t really get anywhere with that either. There were very few websites about building guitars back then, and most of them were just forums where people would ask each other questions about their projects.
