My first solution was using different tunings. I quickly realized a problem with that: only one song in standard tuning works in that tuning. So, while it was insanely fun to play Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” in Drop C on my electric guitar, it was pretty much impossible to play anything else in that tuning. After a couple years of experimenting with various tunings and various songs, I came up with a better solution: start writing songs.

Writing songs is different from playing other people’s songs because you’re able to make your own style with them and not be restricted by what other people have already done. But even then, there are still problems: especially when you’re starting out, your songs tend to sound like everything else out there.

So, how do you make your guitar playing more interesting? Here are three tips for all levels of guitar players to make their music more unique and appealing:

Tip 1: Listen to other people’s music and learn from them

If you are trying to become a better guitar player, then listening to other’s music is a great way of learning what works well. Even if you have your own style, there is no reason not to learn from others. You can learn some of the same techniques that they do, such as chord progression or song structure. You can also see how they use different styles or techniques in their music. This will give you ideas of what works well and what doesn’t.

Tip 2: Try out new things on the guitar

Even if you are good at playing certain styles or techniques, it doesn’t mean that you should always play that way. Sometimes it can be fun to try out new things on the guitar. This can give you a fresh perspective and help improve your skills in other areas as well. It is important not to get stuck in one area for too long because this can cause boredom and lack of motivation.

Tip 3: Practice makes perfect

By far the easiest way to make your guitar playing more interesting is to start playing different rhythmic patterns. A rhythm is just a repeated pattern of notes that you play for a set period of time.

The most common rhythm in music is the quarter note. The quarter note gets the beat, or count, and there are 4 quarter notes to each measure of music. Whatever you choose to play, even if it’s just one or two new rhythms, it will sound better than just using straight up quarter notes all the time.

I’ve been playing the guitar for 10 years, and I’ve met hundreds of other guitar players along the way. One of the most common problems I see with beginner and intermediate musicians is a lack of interesting playing.

A lot of players can play well enough. They’ll have a couple of songs they can play through cleanly, throw in an occasional pentatonic scale, and string together some chords to make them sound decent. They can play a song to pass the time, but they’re not making anything interesting.

The problem is that they’re not thinking about what they’re doing. They’re just going through the motions on autopilot. There are lots of different reasons why this happens. Maybe they’re just starting out, so they don’t know much about music theory yet. Maybe they feel like there’s too much to learn about music theory, so it seems pointless to try to learn any of it. Maybe they learned how to play a few chords from their cousin, and feel like anything else would be too much work.

Whatever the reason may be, you don’t have to do that forever! You can break out of this rut by practicing these three habits:
